Breakfast in Mercure Winchester Wessex Hotel

The Wessex Hotel is a large, efficiently run hotel, part of a chain, which guarantees a specific standard - so you know what you can expect, and I was not disappointed. Especially the breakfast staff was very welcoming and the same goes for the front desk. Breakfast offered the usual range of choices from Continental to English (though I missed the porridge!) , the quality of the products was very good throughout. The real standout positive aspect of the hotel, however, is the location: you are directly next to Winchester Cathedral - you can see it through the breakfast room windows - which is very atmospheric, and it also means that you are in the centre of the city, in easy walking distance to all the sights and shops you might need. Special recommendations: for a relaxed and beautiful evening walk, go to the water meadows, right behind Winchester College, 10 minutes walk from the hotel. And for pubs: I felt myself very well cared for at The Bishop on the Bridge, also very close by. Should I ever come to Winchester again, the Wessex Hotel would be my choice of accommodation.

The Mercure Wessex is ideal for visiting Winchester. The location could not be better - our room had a great view of the cathedral (see photo), and the hotel is within very easy walking distance of the main shops and restaurants. The parking is pretty convenient although not free - £15/day. The breakfast is expensive too. But the rooms are large and the beds are comfy. It's worth noting that the cathedral bells on a Sunday morning start around 10am. They sound glorious but not everyone would be a fan.

Our standard twin room was a good size, beds comfortable, two chairs in the room, good large tv. The room was clean, with nice clean bedding & good pillows. The bar area in the hotel is a calm comfortable place to sit with a drink or a book, with view of cathedral. The staff…are fantastic in this hotel, every single one we came across was charming, friendly & helpful. Location is brilliant, all the shopping & tourist sites within easy walking distance. Overall good value hotel in a great location

I have stayed at this hotel many times because Its location to the town centre is a minutes walk away. Hotel is clean and tidy and rooms are comfortable with a nice view of the cathedral. The only negative is the tiny car park, but if you get to the hotel early enough you should manage to get a space, and there is on road parking but again these fill up quick. Overall a lovely hotel with a fantastic breakfast and will hopefully be returning soon for a stopover on way to Southampton.

Sonia

Good location as close to the High Street. We didn’t leave our car there but the hotel parking looked convenient. Our room overlooked the Cathedral so it was a lovely view and hearing the sound of the bells chiming on Sunday morning was very special. I wanted a cocktail in the bar before going out for dinner and the mixologist could not have been more accommodating. She, and her colleague, went out of their way to make me a delicious cocktail, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
